The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category Could Fix That

As any prominent honors show approaches, you'll find a clamor to include fresh award types to acknowledge overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers with niche passions.

My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would rule. So would tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing above others. This is the request: We need a category for puzzle games.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types actually cover numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, if they accidentally match classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
  • Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
