The fast bowler Set to Play a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Australian cricket captain

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from the Australian camp suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on the 21st of November in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations at play, aside from the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for 24 more hours, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
