Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Scientists emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Users who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined behavioural management.
